Community Organizer (Environmental)
Pay range: $24.00 - 26.00/hr Classification: Non-exempt
Reports to: Executive Director Type: Part-Time
Travel: 20% travel for meetings in the region Effective Date: June 01, 2026
Organizational Overview
Comunidades focuses on amplifying Latina/o and immigrant voices in environmental and social justice issues throughout the Columbia River Gorge. Our mission is to create systemic change through the civic engagement of BIPOC communities. We are a Latina/o-led organization that is rapidly growing.
Founded in 2018 by Latina/o activists, parents, educators, and other community members of the Gorge, Comunidades addresses the need for a Latina/o-led environmental and social justice organization.
Organizational Mission: The mission of Comunidades is to amplify Latina/o voices for environmental and social justice. We are dedicated to changing the infrastructures of power and inequality that affect our communities, as well as empowering people through civic engagement in Latino and immigrant communities whose voices would otherwise be limited and disenfranchised.
Programs and Areas of Work
The selected individual will support the development and implementation of community programs focused on:
Community leadership and civic engagement
Worker and family organizing and empowerment
Youth development and youth leadership
Community forums and rights education
Community journalism and media
Social justice, equity, and community strengthening
Environmental protection and local participation
They will also participate in:
Planning events, forums, and workshops
Field visits
Building relationships with local leaders and organizations
Supporting educational and community campaigns
Bilingual activities (Spanish and English)
Podcast production and social media content creation (videos, photographs, and audio)
Job Summary
The Community Organizer will work to advance environmental justice and strengthen community power by supporting the development of programs, workshops, events, and activities focused on leadership, rights education, youth engagement, and civic participation. The selected individual will help build and strengthen relationships with community members, local leaders, partner organizations, and promote available resources, while supporting initiatives that create positive social impact throughout the Gorge region. We are seeking a person who is committed to environmental protection, empathetic, organized, and interested in community work, social justice, and strengthening local families and communities.
Key Responsibilities
Support the organization and implementation of community programs and activities.
Conduct community outreach and connect individuals with resources and services.
Participate in the planning of workshops, forums, trainings, and events.
Build positive relationships with community members, leaders, and local organizations.
Support educational campaigns, trainings, and community engagement efforts.
Collaborate on youth leadership activities.
Promote community empowerment initiatives.
Assist in promoting events and programs through social media, phone outreach, and community visits.
Maintain effective communication with the team and support various organizational needs.
Represent the values and mission of Comunidades with respect, empathy, and professionalism.
Qualifications
Experience in community organizing, advocacy, community leadership, or related work.
Full fluency in Spanish and intermediate-level English proficiency.
Demonstrated commitment to social and environmental justice principles.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Knowledge of local community issues and social justice principles.
Strong ability to build relationships with diverse communities.
Proven project management and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Proficiency with digital communication tools, social media platforms, and Google Workspace.
Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance as required by law.
Availability to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of environmental justice issues affecting Latino communities.
Work experience in the Columbia River Gorge region.
Experience developing and implementing advocacy or community campaigns.
